Kearns is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, named after U.S. Senator Thomas Kearns. The area was originally farmland before being transformed during World War II into Kearns Army Air Base, a major training facility for the U.S. Army Air Forces. After the base’s closure in 1946, the land was developed into a residential community. In 2024, Kearns officially became a city, having previously been a metro township since 2017. The city is known for the Utah Olympic Oval, built for the 2002 Winter Olympics and renowned for having the “fastest ice on earth.” It continues to host speed skating events and public recreational activities .
